Wendy and Melissa are both mums of children who have had cancer. They met in hospital during their children's treatment. Wendy's 12yr old daughter Lucy was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in September 2006. She went through 6 months of intensive chemotherapy and has now been in remission for 1 year. Melissa's 7yr old son Ben was diagnosed in September 2006 with Neuroblastoma and after 18 months of treatment which included chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and a bone marrow transplant he sadly passed away on 25th January 2008.
On a quest to make a difference, Melissa and Wendy (The Cancer Tears) are taking on a challenge with the goal to raise much needed funds for children's cancer research. The Challenge - The Great Ocean Walk - is a 55km trek over 3 days in Victoria's Otway National Park from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles on March 20th-22nd, 2009. Their aim is to raise $25,000 for the Oncology Children's Foundation to fund children's cancer research, helping to improve treatment and hopefully one day find a cure.
The Cancer Tears have recruited 25 walkers for the Great Ocean Walk which will generate $10,000 for the Oncology Children's Foundation.
They are undertaking a number of additional fundraising activities in the lead up to the walk to help reach their goal of raising $25,000 for the OCF.
Wendy and Melissa would like to say thank you to everyone who is supporting them in the quest to raise vital funds for the Oncology Children's Foundation.
